Our Story
We met in a New Haven coffee shop in 2017 while working on startup nonprofits. Margaret was asking Sam for advice on fundraising. For many months, our friendship grew on a foundation of exploring New Haven’s cocktail bars, discussing Lord of the Rings, meeting up to “work” but instead talking for hours, and running into each other at a beloved community space that we both worked out of called the Grove.
The day after one of Sam’s most challenging work experiences - a hostile community meeting in Wooster Square about the youth shelter he was working on - he took a chance on the roof of his apartment, and asked Margaret out. It went really well. Shortly thereafter, he asked if we could go inside to watch a Celtics playoff game. (It was a really big game).
Since roof day, our relationship blossomed in New Haven, a city and community that is so important to us. We have built a life that balances adventure and cozy nesting. We drove up the Pacific Coast Highway on our first vacation together, made it out to Rockport, MA every summer, went on a weeks long Amtrak trip, and visited friends in Maine, New York, Philadelphia, and more. We also spent a ton of time in our New Haven apartment together, making food and drinks and hanging out with friends on our cherished porch deck.
In 2022, Sam proposed to Margaret in the mountains in Southern France, while staying at a small village called Fanghetto. It went really well. And thankfully Sam had learned at that point not to suggest that they go watch sports. Afterward, we embarked on our biggest adventure yet by moving to California for graduate school. After an unforgettable roadtrip across the country, we are enjoying our life here in California, exploring redwoods and beaches, and building a community here with friends and family. We can’t wait to celebrate the next chapter in our lives together with the people who mean the most to us. We couldn’t be more grateful to have you by our side as we blend cultures, families, and homes.
